stk100 vs glock 17

Stk100 Vs Glock 17 - Out of the box, the RIA STL100 includes a number of bells that are commonly installed on polymer-framed pistols. Yamil Sud

Do you remember buying a polymer-framed assault pistol only to spend even more to customize it to your needs? Yes, everyone does. Add frame weight, lighten the frame, change the grip angle, add a beaver, add optical options - the list goes on and on. You can almost triple the original price of the weapon. Today, gun manufacturers offer pistols with all of these accessories as standard. A prime example is the new RIA STK100, a multi-purpose factory pistol that sets a new benchmark for this trend.

The RIA STK100 is what I would call a 99 percent compatible Glock pistol. Its compatibility extends to almost all internal parts, except for the sights, barrel lock, magazine release and pins.

Review: Rock Island Armory Stk100

Some of the nice features of the RIA STK100 include cutouts to reduce weight, an ergonomic grip angle and checkerboard, an optical glass and a comfortable trigger guard. Yamil Sud

The STK100 has a list of features that put it in a class of its own. It features a folding aluminum alloy frame, textured 1911-style grip, extended beaver, stainless steel guide rod, lightweight bolt action with forward cocking, Glock-style optics and front sight.

The only feature I'm ambivalent about is the rear view. While I like the low-profile serrated front sight and its wide, square cutout, the fact that it is attached to the optic mounting plate means you lose the front sight when mounting the optic. I would like the view and the label to be independent parts.

The gun comes with two Glock compatible KCI USA 17 round magazines, so if you are like me and have a good selection of Glock 17 magazines, you are good to go.

One of the significant improvements to the RIA STK100 is the absence of frame studs. An original Glock has three studs to attach the barrel assembly, trigger, and trigger guard/ejector. The STK100 replaces these pins with screws. I'll take a bolt that's properly torqued with a little thread lock on a stud that could fly off with recoil any day. The overall weight of the gun is excellent, at a very comfortable 33 ounces with an empty magazine versus the standard Glock 17's 25 ounces.

The grip is a folding aluminum frame, and I was a little skeptical at first, but when I got the gun, my fears were allayed. Of course, there is a seam, but the two pieces fit perfectly and the seam is barely noticeable. The sides of the grip are checkered and grippy enough without being too aggressive, while the front and rear grip straps have a very nice and comfortable serration that's just about perfect. And the 1911-style grip angle is what dreams are made of. The back of the grip sits right between the arched and flat design of the mainspring cap of the 1911, and to me it's just perfect.

Rock Island Armory Stk100 Striker Fired Pistol Announced

I went to C2 Tactical in Scottsdale, Arizona to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of the STK100. To gauge accuracy, I used Federal 147-grain Syntech practice match ammunition with a claimed muzzle velocity of 1,000 fps and 326 ft-lbs of energy. I also tested Federal Personal Defense Punch ammo with a 124-grain projectile with a claimed muzzle velocity of 1,150 fps and an energy rating of 364 ft-lbs. I shot the pistol at 10 yards using the Ransom International Multi Cal Steady Rest, which is a solid machined aluminum platform that takes most of the human influence out of the shooting equation. With the Federal Personal Defense Syntech practice match ammo, I got a 1.36-inch 5-shot group, and with the 124-grain Federal Personal Defense Punch ammo, my groups came down to a very nice .980-inch caliber.

To gauge reliability, I set up a Gunsite silhouette target at 7 yards and did some practice with the Federal 147-Grainer. I shot guided pairs, ramming pairs, and drills. Every shot was in the intended target area and I experienced no malfunctions with the ammo, magazines, or the rifle itself.

I have also shot this bolt action rifle a lot and the factory trigger is nice with a crisp break. The trigger has a flat surface and the centrally mounted rotary safety sits flush when pressed, which is nice. The trigger on the mine breaks at a very comfortable 4.5 lbs.

Thanks to the lightweight bolt and aluminum alloy frame, the rifle is perfectly balanced - the weight is concentrated on the frame, not on the front of the bolt. This allows the bolt to move quickly and the recoil controlled for quick follow-up shots.

Rock Island Armory Rolls Out The Stk100, Their First Ever Striker Fired Pistol

While this gun is near perfect, its compatibility with Glock parts means I can still make some changes. I want to use it in stock configuration for a while to get used to its handling and performance, but I think a gold or brass front sight and some Apex tactical parts may find their way into this gun in the future.

In summary, this STK100 is a keeper. Rock Island Armory has taken the classic Glock design and features and refined them to create a much more comfortable, aesthetically pleasing and ergonomic pistol. You get many of the best features shooters want—and pay a lot of money for—in a package that won't break your savings account. MSRP is $599. It works great as a competition, recreational, and self-defense pistol, and I wouldn't hesitate to use the RIA STK100 for everyday carry as well.
